Mary Abi-Karam

Mary Abi-Karam is a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, double majoring in Peace, War, and Defense and Philosophy. She debated at American Heritage Broward in Plantation, Florida, competing in both LD and PF for five years. Mary qualified in both LD and PF for TOC, and qualified for NSDA four times. During her career, Mary championed the Cypress Bay Invitational, was ranked 3rd place speaker at NSDA, semifinaled at states and the Nova Southeastern University Invitational, and advanced to late elimination rounds at Barkley, Valley, Yale, and the National Speech and Debate Tournament, earning speaker awards along the way. As the Lower School Director and Junior High Director of the Heritage debate team, she coached novice competitors for four years in various debate formats, judged local and state competitions, and led bi-weekly practices for students. She also coached NSD last year. Mary has experience coaching all styles of debate, from lay debate to progressive debate, and enjoys teaching high theory kritiks and theory.
