1AR/AR
General Definition
The first affirmative rebuttal is when the affirmative team attacks the negative's positions and rebuilds their own.
In Public Forum, there is only one rebuttal per team. The affirmative rebuttal is either the third or fourth speech in the round and is a time for the affirmative to attack the negative's case. If the affirmative is going second, they will also rebuild their own case, which is called frontlining.
The first affirmative rebuttal (1AR) is four minutes long and spent rebuilding the affirmative case and tearing down the negatives.
The first affirmative rebuttal must respond to both the second negative constructive and the first negative rebuttal. Due to a lack of time, teams usually pick a few core arguments to extend in the round. The speech is five minuted long.
