General Definition
Topicality is an argument that one side (usually the affirmative) is proposing an argument or a plan that is outside the scope of the resolution.
In Public Forum, a topicality is usually made when one team establishes a definition or argues for something the other side does not believe to be within the resoultion.
In Lincon Douglas, topicality is an argument debating whether or not the affirmative’s plan can be done within the resolution. The negative team can use this argument to show that the affirmative’s plan relies on flawed or inadequate definitions of key terms in the resolution.
See Lincoln Douglas definition.
