Judge Obligations
We believe that every judge you provide regardless of division should be highly qualified. Highly qualified means your judge is a trained individual who will actively listen to each debater’s arguments and carefully decide the round, assigning proper speaker points and writing a decision. Judges should give an oral decision where at a minimum, they tell the debaters in the round who they voted for.
The tournament has the right to remove any judge from the pool that tournament staff defines as unqualified at any time during the tournament. If removals are made, club personnel will be contacted. Schools will be charged a full judge hire cost for replacement.
Judging obligations will be based on how many entries you have in each event. We require 1 judge for every 2 entries or fraction thereof.
All judges are obligated to judge through the first full elimination round in the event they are entered OR one round past any round in which their school’s students are actively competing, whichever is later.
You will be charge $350 per uncovered judge. Schools, at a minimum, must enter one judge into the pool and cover 75% of their judge obligation. Hired judge requests are due November 15th at 5:00pm. Any requests after that time will not be accepted. We have a limited pool of potential hired judges – requests are not approved until finalized by the tournament.
If your judge does not show for a debate, your school will be assessed a missed round fee. This fee will be $50 for your school’s first missed round and $75 for each round that follows.
All judges in all divisions must have posted paradigms on Tabroom by November 15th at 5:00pm. Any judge found without a paradigm after this deadline will not count towards your obligation, will be marked as a free strike on preference sheets and your school will be charged for a hired judge fee for any rounds they were entered for.
Any judge changes after the deadline will be assessed a penalty. You may not substitute any judge in a varsity debate judge pool. Schools that change their judges after strikes have opened will be subject to losing strikes for their teams.
Finally, it is our intention to offer teams in the varsity division access to strikes. Teams will be able to strike up to 15% of the judge pool.
Schedule
This schedule is tentative and will be updated based on entries once registration is frozen. Prelim rounds will be double flighted. We will expediate the schedule where possible. Students missing 10 minutes after the assigned start time of a round will be forfeited. Tab declares and enters forfeits. If you think a team should be forfeited, you must talk to Tab. You may not enter that result on your own. Judges missing at “In Room Time” will be replaced and fined.
